Aberdeen Heat & Power — Delivering Large-Scale EV Infrastructure for Council Fleet Operations

Aberdeen Heat & Power

Challenge

Aberdeen Heat & Power required a high-capacity EV charging solution to support the growing operational demands of Aberdeen City Council’s electric fleet and staff vehicles as part of the council’s wider transition towards cleaner transport and reduced emissions

The project presented several technical and logistical challenges, including:

  • Supporting a mix of rapid DC charging and AC workplace charging

  • Coordinating with the DNO for upgraded electrical capacity

  • Managing extensive groundworks and civil engineering requirements

  • Ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing council operations

  • Future-proofing the site for continued EV fleet expansion

The client required a turnkey contractor capable of managing the full project from planning and infrastructure design through to installation and commissioning.

Solution

Swift Charging was appointed to deliver a complete end-to-end EV charging infrastructure project tailored to the operational needs of Aberdeen Heat & Power and Aberdeen City Council.

The installation included:

  • 2x Sungrow Dual 80kW rapid DC chargers

  • 3x Rolec 22kW AC workplace chargers

Swift Charging managed the entire project lifecycle, including:

  • DNO coordination and power upgrade management

  • Site planning and infrastructure design

  • Full groundworks and trenching works

  • Electrical installation and charger commissioning

  • Installation of both fleet rapid charging and workplace charging infrastructure

  • System testing and operational handover

The combination of rapid DC charging and AC charging facilities provided the site with a flexible solution capable of supporting council fleet vehicles, operational vehicles, and staff EV charging simultaneously.

Results

Key outcomes include:

  • 2x Sungrow Dual 80kW rapid chargers installed for fleet operations

  • 3x Rolec 22kW chargers installed for workplace and staff charging

  • Full DNO coordination and infrastructure upgrades completed

  • Extensive groundworks and electrical installation delivered efficiently

  • Improved operational efficiency for Aberdeen City Council’s EV fleet

  • Future-ready infrastructure designed for ongoing fleet expansion

  • Enhanced sustainability and reduced transport emissions across council operations

The installation now plays a key role in supporting Aberdeen’s wider environmental and decarbonisation strategy while ensuring reliable daily charging for operational vehicles and staff.
